It’s a new shelfie and we’re up to number eleven. And this one is my Dashiell Hammett collection. His face is the first one on my Hardboiled Mt. Rushmore. So, he’s got a solid shelf in my Hardboiled collection.

William T. Nolan’s bio on the far left has some good info, but he’s a bit of a hack. He doesn’t miss an opportunity to run down Carroll John Daly to make Hammett look better. It’s juvenile, and Hammett doesn’t need the help. Reminds me of L. Sprague deCamp putting down Robert E. Howard to elevate his own Conan stuff.

Diane Johnson’s’ biography was written with Lillian Hellman’s permission (Hammett’s long-time mistress/girlfriend controlled his Estate). It’s pretty clear Hellman had approval authority, and it’s not the most objective book.

Richard Layman may be THE authority on Hammett, and his book Discovering The Maltese Falcon and Sam Spade is a mish-mash of stuff related to Hammett and that book. Fun read for fans of The Black Bird.

I’m a big Continental Op fan, and Otto Penzler’s Big Book series has all the stories, plus some very good essays for each of the editors Hammett wrote them for. These are the original Black Mask versions. It includes the two serialized novels, and is a good book for Op fans.

My favorite PI book, and my favorite PI novel: The Maltese Falcon. This version has some cool black and white photos related to the novel. I wrote an essay on the book and the three movie versions that is pretty good.

Spade and Archer – Joe Gores was one of the best hardboiled writers of the post-Pulp Era, with his DKA Repo Company stories. He wrote an authorized prequel to The Maltese Falcon. It’s good, but not great.

I have the Sam Spade short stories in ebook form. I’m listening to The Adventures of Sam Spade as I type this. The January 10, 1948 episode was a double-length one. And it’s a sequel to The Maltese Falcon. Spade (played by Howard Duff) makes a phone call to Philip Marlowe – played by movie Marlowe Robert Montgomery.

Nightmare Town is the title story of a wide-ranging collection with some good stories. Recommended. I learned hardboiled and noir from the Black Lizard/Vintage line, including Hammett.

Along with the Continental Op, there’s The Glass Key, which is a terrific novel, and was a fine movie starring Alan Ladd. Hammett (who drank heavily and wasn’t the most reliable writer) had told Black Mask editor Joe ‘Cap’ Shaw that his serial was called The Glass Key. But there wasn’t any glass key in it as he was finishing it up. He tossed in a dream about a glass key to meet requirements.

I’m not a fan of The Thin Man novella (which he wrote after quitting the Pulps), or the movies starring William Powell. A bunch of my Pulp fans are, however. I also have the ebook of The Return of the Thin Man. It contains two treatments/partial novellas which he wrote for movie projects. Both were turned into Powell movies. I liked reading those.

The last Vintage book is a thin novella Hammett wrote called Woman in the Dark. I like this one, though it doesn’t seem too popular (or even well-known).

The Selected Letters book is quite the resource for anyone writing about Hammett.

Shadow Man is the aforementioned Layman’s bio. It’s useful.

Dooley’s bio is slim but useful.

Don Herron is right up there as a Hammett expert, and his Walking Tour guide is a neat little book.

The pic cut off Joe Gores’ Hammett, a fictional story about Hammett, solving a crime. It was made into a big screen movie by Francis Ford Coppola.

I need to take a new pic, as this shelfie does not include Steeger Books’ first two collection of Continental Op stories; I wrote the introductions for both.

Bob Byrne’s ‘A (Black) Gat in the Hand’ made its Black Gate debut in 2018 and has returned every summer since.

His ‘The Public Life of Sherlock Holmes’ column ran every Monday morning at Black Gate from March, 2014 through March, 2017. And he irregularly posts on Rex Stout’s gargantuan detective in ‘Nero Wolfe’s Brownstone.’ He is a member of the Praed Street Irregulars, founded www.SolarPons.com (the only website dedicated to the ‘Sherlock Holmes of Praed Street’).

He organized Black Gate’s award-nominated ‘Discovering Robert E. Howard’ series, as well as the award-winning ‘Hither Came Conan’ series. Which is now part of THE Definitive guide to Conan. He also organized 2023’s ‘Talking Tolkien.’

He has contributed stories to The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories – Parts III, IV, V, VI, XXI, and XXXIII.

He has written introductions for Steeger Books, and appeared in several magazines, including Black Mask, Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine, The Strand Magazine, and Sherlock Magazine.
