New Treasures: The Black Coast by Mike Brooks
Mike Brooks’ Dark Run space opera trilogy was published in 2016/17, and was warmly received. Kirkus Reviews called it an “old-fashioned space Western… an entertaining page-turner,” and Andrew Liptak at the B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog said it “deserves to be this year’s break out. A space opera in the rollicking tradition of Timothy Zahn [and] John Scalzi…”
For the past few years Brooks has been playing around in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, writing novels like Rites of Passage and Brutal Kunnin’. This spring he re-invented himself again, this time as an epic fantasy novelist, kicking off The God-King Chronicles series with the novel The Black Coast. It was named an Amazon Editors’ Pick for Best SFF in February, and Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review. Here’s a snippet from their enthusiastic review.
With this marvelous series opener, sci-fi author Brooks (Dark Deeds) demonstrates that he’s as skillful at fantasy epics as he is at space capers. Saana Sattistutar, chief of the Brown Eagle clan, has sailed her people from their island nation of Tjakorsha to distant Narida, fleeing the draug, a beast akin to a demon that has conquered most of their archipelago. The Tjakorshi have only ever raided the Naridan shore but now hope to settle among its people…. Brooks richly imagines the cultures of Narida, Tjakorsha, and Kiburu ce Alaba, and peoples them with multifaceted characters — plus creatures suspiciously like dinosaurs. The many point of view characters create a tapestry of blood, honor, and survival. Any fan of epic fantasy will find something to love here, particularly readers of Raymond E. Feist or Victor Milán.
The Black Coast was published by Solaris on March 16, 2021. It is 640 pages, priced at $14.99 in paperback and $6.99 in digital formats. The next volume in the God-King Chronicles, The Splinter King, is due on September 7. Get all the details here.
