My life gets crazy busy in July, and stays busy to Christmas, when I get a break. It’s a task to get my planned weekly column done. Which can shift the ‘current one’ into ‘in progress’ status. Which is the case this week. So, here’s a look at some of the stuff I hope to cover in the current incarnation of A (Black) Gat in the Hand.

DAY KEENE

Last week I posted (finally) the Jo Gar essay which I started in 2018. Nice to check that off the list. The current ‘in progress’ essay is on a Day Keene story from the September, 1949 issue of New Detective. I’ve already written one post on Keene here. I think he is an under-appreciated hard boiled writer. That issue also has a story by Frederic Brown. And one by my all-time favorite writer, John D. MacDonald. So, maybe I’ll mine that one for more material. The fact you’re reading this post right now, means I still haven’t finished my Keene essay.

HARDBOILED DAMES

I’ve worked here and there on an essay looking at some of the hardboiled females in the Pulps. Not surprisingly, they weren’t exactly common. But I’ll talk about some like Carrie Cashin, Trixie Meehan, and Pat Seward. And at least a mention of radio star Candi Matson, who is going to get her own post some day. I have an anthology edited by Bernard Drew, titled Hardboiled Dames, which will be of use.

 

DASHIELL HAMMETT’S “THE ASSISTANT MURDERER”

This is an odd story from his early hardboiled days. It struck me as more like a non-violent Carroll John Daly (yes, I am aware, that’s an oxymoron), than Hammett. So, we’ll take a look at it.

 

MORE DAVID DODGE

I wrote an essay on David Dodge in 2022, digging a bit into two books: The Long Escape (Al Colby) And Death and Taxes (Whit Whitney). I like both characters (who appeared in a few books each), but I want to do a more in-depth post on one of the other Whitney books. He is an accountant (as was Dodge in real life) who gets dragged into hardboiled adventures – which he’s not really cut out for. I like Dodge’s writing.

 

BOX 13

I have nearly 1,500 words on a piece about Alan Ladd’s neat radio show, Box 13. Ladd was a reporter that puts an ad in the paper,: ‘Adventure wanted. Will go any place. Will do anything.’ He doesn’t charge for his help: he uses the experience as the basis for his next novel. Replies to his ad are sent to…Box 13. Finishing this essay seems like a pretty reasonable goal.

 

THE GIRL WITH THE SILVER EYES – HAMMETT

I wrote what I consider to be a pretty darn good into to Volume One of Steeger Books’ Continental Op collection. Volume Two is debuting at Pittsburgh’s Pulp Fest in a couple weeks. I’ll post that intro here in the column, when the book comes out.

 

TRACER BULLET

I did a fun post on a Calvin and Hobbes series where the imaginative boy was a hardboiled PI. There was another series where he played the character again. Different ‘crime.’ I think I’d like to revisit Tracer Bullet. I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes.

 

AND….

I’m not even pretending that this is the Summer I get to Wade Miller’s San Diego private eye, Max Thursday. But I really should some day. I’m a big fan. I’ve done a partial re-read a couple times, but not gotten anything written. I also did a complete re-read of Joe Gores’ DKA series, but didn’t write an essay either. I should take care of both of those.

There are lots of topics on my ‘To Cover‘ list, like more Frederick Nebel, something on Cap Shaw’s Hardboiled Omnibus, more radio shows featuring Philip Marlowe, and Johnny Dollar. Maybe the Sam Spade episode that was a sequel to The Maltese Falcon – there are LOTS of things to still cover.

Bob Byrne’s ‘A (Black) Gat in the Hand’ made its Black Gate debut in 2018 and has returned every summer since.

His ‘The Public Life of Sherlock Holmes’ column ran every Monday morning at Black Gate from March, 2014 through March, 2017. And he irregularly posts on Rex Stout’s gargantuan detective in ‘Nero Wolfe’s Brownstone.’ He is a member of the Praed Street Irregulars, founded www.SolarPons.com (the only website dedicated to the ‘Sherlock Holmes of Praed Street’).

He organized Black Gate’s award-nominated ‘Discovering Robert E. Howard’ series, as well as the award-winning ‘Hither Came Conan’ series. Which is now part of THE Definitive guide to Conan. He also organized 2023’s ‘Talking Tolkien.’

He has contributed stories to The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories – Parts III, IV, V, VI, XXI, and XXXIII.

He has written introductions for Steeger Books, and appeared in several magazines, including Black Mask, Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine, The Strand Magazine, and Sherlock Magazine.
